Cortland, Nebraska is a small home-town community located mid-way between Lincoln & Beatrice on Highway 77 in Gage County. It was founded in 1883 and with the completion of the railroad line from Lincoln to Beatrice, it boomed to its peak population of 600 residents in one season. The surrounding countryside had been settled for many years by farmers which also gave Cortland splendid business from the start.
The community presently has a population of 482. There are over 40 businesses, a volunteer fire department and rescue unit, post office, a museum, churches, daycares, housing developments, and several organizations. There is also a community center, park, and ball park, as well as the Homestead Trail, which runs directly through town.
There are many great activities hosted in town throughout the year, including: Cortland Fest, the Easter Egg hunt, Santa Claus, Spookfest, and Garage Sales. These events are sponsored by the Cortland Improvement Association. Please take a moment to browse through our new site. Thanks for visiting!
Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. Come and join in weekly food and fellowship with Bingo after lunch! For those 60 and under, $6, for 60+ a $4 donation is suggested. Located in the southwest corner of the Community Center. Volunteers provide setup, serving and cleanup.
Every Tuesday night 6:30-9:00, every 2nd, 4th and 5th Thursday 6:00-9:00. Come and join in some old-fashioned fun with live country music at the Opry House in Cortland. Located at 305 W. 4th Street, guests are encouraged to bring snacks. See ya'll there!
August 9, 2019: Come and celebrate the end of summer with food, games, music and movies in the park.
The annual contest will resume for the months of May, June, July, August and September. Judges will pick one home each month to be the winner of a $25 gift card, a sign in their yard, and a photo in the garden section of the Voice News.
Friday, June 7, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The registration fee will be $8.00. Registration forms will be mailed out to all Village residents. Registrations will include all the information on what date they should be returned and where. Detailed maps will be available at each registered garage sale that weekend. Saturday, June 22, 2019 This annual all-day community event begins on Friday - Festivities begin at dusk on Friday night, featuring music and movies in the park. Saturday's activities include a color run, the antique tractor show and contest, Little Tuggers, a bake sale, and a car show. There will be activities for the kids and some new activities for adults, as well as some competition events. The usual circus train ride and horse-drawn trolley will be giving rides around town. Lots of good food vendors to satisfy your appetites. And don't forget, there will be a parade and the fireworks show to end the day at the ball park. Watch for the Schedule of Events flyers posted around town and in the Voice News. Come join us for a day filled with lots of good fun!!
Friday evenings at dusk We will be having our annual free movies again this year. They are scheduled on Friday evenings at dusk from July 12 through August 9, 2019. Concessions of popcorn and pop will be available for purchase. Hope to see a big crowd this summer!
October 19, 2019 The annual Halloween event will be held with at the Community Center and Park. Activities will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
December 14, 2019 Santa will be arriving at the Cortland Community Center on Saturday, December 14, 2019. There will be activities and refreshments from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
